Singapore’s Boat Quay, before it became symbolic for its thriving nightlife in the modern era. Home to the Singapore River, it was a busy trade zone where ‘tongkang’, which are unmotorised cargo ships as seen in this image, would regularly navigate through it to deliver goods. The modern building on the left is the Bank of China Building, which was built on the site of the old Guthrie Building in 1948.
