A sight like this was not uncommon to travellers arriving into Singapore in the 70s. Kallang, a district nestled within the heart of the country, is home to numerous landmarks cherished by Singaporeans and foreigners alike. One such landmark, the former National Stadium opened in 1973, was a place where countless sporting events took place and served as a location for the country to celebrate its prided National Day with its citizens. It has since been redeveloped into a modernised stadium for hosting both national and international events.
Another landmark noted for its brutalist architecture, unique colours and diagonally stepped terraces, the Golden Mile Complex, affectionally dubbed 'Little Thailand', was also built in 1973 and has been an ethnic enclave for the Thai population since. It will sadly close down in 2023 due to redevelopment efforts.
