Kusu Island, one of the Southern islands of Singapore located 5.6 km from the mainland, is a sacred location that attracts thousands of devotees during the yearly pilgrimage. Kusu, meaning Tortoise in Hokkien, is a reference to a mythological legend of a tortoise transforming into an island to save two shipwrecked sailors, one Malay and the other Chinese.
The island is home to a Chinese temple and to three Keramat, or sacred Malay shrines depicting holy figures. During the lunar ninth month of every year, Malay and Chinese devotees flock to the island to worship their respective deities.
